‘Tis the Season to be Kind: How You Can Give Back This Christmas

Christmas Day is but nine sleeps away! That’s almost nine whole days in which to get into the Christmas spirit and to give something back: and perhaps to make a resolution for 2015…

Here are five simple ways you can make a difference in the Deptford area:

1. Give to a food bank

A great number of organisations across Britain have been working hard this year to support families and individuals who are struggling to feed themselves. And it’s easy to get involved: when you’re doing your Christmas Dinner shopping, simply pop a few extras into your trolley and donate to a food bank. Lewisham Council has made a handy suggestions page of what to donate and where in the New Cross and Deptford area.

2. Meet Me at the Albany

Described as ‘the kind of stereotype-smashing thing that sticks two knitting needles up at anyone who dares assume day care for older people is about flower arranging and endless cups of tea’, you’d be hard-pushed to find a more entertaining way to give something back to your community this Christmas.  Hosted every Tuesday, Meet Me at the Albany is a new take on day care for Over 60s that is always looking for volunteers, so what are you waiting for?

3. Reach out to Deptford

deptfordreach

Deptford Reach is a drop-in centre for adults over 16 years of age who are vulnerable through homelessness, mental illness, loneliness, social exclusion and severe poverty. They support more than 70 people each weekday through a programme of courses, workshops, activities and advice sessions. They work on employment skills, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, mental health and creative expression to name a few; so if you can contribute towards any of there areas take a look and see how you can get involved.

4. Get Souped Up

soup

Nothing says winter like a hearty soup to warm you up. Lewisham Soup Kitchen serves soup to those in need every Thursday from 6 – 7pm, so get your ladle out and serve some steaming bowls of soup.

5. Invite a lonely neighbour to Christmas Dinner

christmasdinnerfamily

This week The Independent published an article explaining that 400,000 pensioners will be alone on Christmas Day this year. One simple way to change that is to invite someone you know will be alone on Christmas Day around to join you for your festive meal. It’s  a small gesture, and they might decline your offer, but if everybody asked a neighbour to join them then the shocking figure of 400,000 could be much lower.

So make this the most wonderful time of the year and do just one small thing to make someone else’s Christmas as festive as yours. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Year of £1 Tickets

£1tickets_spring2015As we prepare for the launch of our Spring 2015 season – complete with ten £10 tickets for every show – we look back on the launch of the £1 ticket scheme in December 2013. It has been one year since we started this initiative to encourage people to take a risk on a show that they would not otherwise go and see. By selling them first at Deptford Market, we give priority to our most local audiences to try something new. One year and two season launches later, we aim to reach even more at our next season launch this Wednesday 10 December with an exciting Spring season programme not to be missed. If you’re up for taking a chance on something new, or have not visited us before, pop by our stall under the pink pagoda from 9am until 1pm to chat with us about the new season and get your hands on a £1 ticket.

Bay2ODYIQAASI0f£1 tickets are all the buzz…

More than 225 tickets were sold through the market stall [on 6 December 2013], alongside a second release at the box office on the day, with around 60% bought by first-time customers.’ Read about it in The Stage here.

‘It’s about who you want to see the work, and even how you want that work to be received.’ Read our Head of Communications’ thoughts about it in the Guardian here.

Check out the Storify of last year’s launch here.

Our Spring 2015 season launches this Wednesday 10 December at Deptford Market from 9am – 1pm. All remaining £1 tickets will then be released for sale online from 2pm. For more information, click here.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year…

IMG_5792right
The days have grown shorter and a chill is in the air, but we are very excited this December. Our biggest season ever is soon finishing off with a bang and to get you pumped up, our Marketing Assistant, Allison Gold, lets us know what she is most looking forward to before the Christmas holiday.

This Autumn season has been huge, jam-packed with a rich assortment of art. Some highlights were our first BOLD Festival celebrating arts and older people, the biannual festival of South African culture Afrovibesand who could possibly forget that we were the national home of Fun Palaces, celebrating Joan Littlewood’s centenary as well as arts and sciences? With our friends, we even created our very own Deptford Fun Palaces for all to enjoy on Sunday 5 October. It has really been a whirlwind, but it’s not over just yet. We’ve still got one more month to ring in a New Year properly. Here are three brilliant events yet to come this month:

1) We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

Of course, most of the Albs is absolutely buzzing about our upcoming family Christmas show, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Little Angel Theatre’s take on the classic Michael Rosen book is just too cute to resist. The charming puppets just leap off the page in search of a bear. If you stick around after the show, you just might be able to play a little dress-up with our Bear Hunt Corner, including a grumpy bear costume!

Wednesday 10 December – Tuesday 6 January 2015. For more information and to book tickets, click here.

2) Snowflakes & Snowballs & the Deptford Bear Hunt

Another seasonal event to warm your toes is Deptford Lounge’s very own winter wonderland Snowflakes & Snowballs, a free day of festive family fun. As it’s rather nippy outside, head on inside for a warmth of the Lounge where there will be craft stalls, performances, activities and even some Christmas film screenings. What better way to celebrate this time of year? And if your little ones are a bit more energetic, they can join the Deptford Bear Hunt – pick up a list of clues and spot the bears around Deptford for a chance to win a Family Ticket to We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Snowflakes & Snowballs is Saturday 13 December, 10am – 4pm at Deptford Lounge. No booking required. For more information, click here.

The Deptford Bear Hunt is happening the week of Saturday 6 to Saturday 13 December. Pick up a form with clues at the reception of the Albany or Deptford Lounge.

3) Chill Pill: Christmas Special

To end the year off just right, we had to include a dose of our favourite spoken word collective, Chill Pill. Come chill out for a Christmassy night of poetry and a dash of music with four-piece South East London band United Vibrations. Even I would come out of my winter hibernation for this.

Thursday 18 December, 8pm (doors). For more information and to book tickets, click here.

I hope to see all your smiling faces before the New Year at the Albany!
